Improving multiple exclusion homelessness (MEH) services: frontline worker responses to insecure attachment styles

Purpose This study aims to examine the emotional and cognitive responses of frontline homelessness service support staff highly insecure attachment styles (AS) exhibited by people experiencing multiple exclusion (MEH), that is, a combination other forms deep social exclusion. Design/methodology/approach Focus groups were conducted with (N = 19) in four services Scotland. Hypothetical case vignettes depicting AS (enmeshed, fearful, withdrawn angry-dismissive) used facilitate discussions. Data is analysed thematically. Findings Service users characterised high anxiety (enmeshed or fearful) often evoked feelings compassion staff. Their openness accepting help led more effective interactions between users. However, ambivalence at times overdependence associated these placed risk study-related stress exhaustion. Avoidant (withdrawn frustration need for self-reliance defensive attitudes experienced as hostile dismissing. job dissatisfaction acted barrier engagement, leaving this group likely “fall through net” support. Originality/value Existing literature describes challenges encounter when attempting engage MEH, but provides little insight into causes consequences “difficult” interactions. suggests an attachment-informed approach care can promote constructive engagement sector.
